Because multi-level marketing is such an overwhelming presence in his community, Jared suspected that one day he would eventually become involved in the industry. However, Jared had never seen a product that really intrigued him and turned his head—that is, until he became aware of MXI Corp’s Xoçai healthy chocolate. “I’ve always kind of prepared myself to get involved in this type of industry, because of the power of what it can do for, not only people’s health, but financially. So, when I saw this come by, I just jumped in with both feet.” It was Jared’s best friend, Brett Engemann, that first introduced him to MXI Corp. Brett, as it happens, is the brother-in-law of the well-known CNN talk show host Larry King. It was Brett’s sister Shawn (Larry King’s wife) that introduced her brother Brett to Xoçai chocolate. Larry is a good friend of Janette Brooks, the president of MXI Corp, and it was Janette who first introduced her products to Larry King and Shawn. They loved the products so much that Shawn joined the company as a distributor. When Jared first got started in the business about a year ago, he started out by simply sharing the products with his friends and family. He found everyone to be very receptive—after all, who doesn’t love chocolate? Some of them joined the business, and others became customers. Since those early days, the company has added a variety of technology tools including websites, webinars, conference calls, and a product video that make it easy to share the benefits of the products and sponsor people around the country.
Nevertheless, Wally was curious, and wanted to know if what Jared was telling him about chocolate was true. Jared suggested that Wally google ‘healthy chocolate’ and ‘antioxidants’ on the Internet, and read up on all the independent research that had been done on the benefits of antioxidants and natural dark chocolate. What Wally found amazed him. There was a wealth of information and independent research documenting the health benefits of natural dark chocolate, and he got excited about it. So he started taking the product, and made it a regular part of his daily health regimen. He found that he really liked the products, and that he received incredible health benefits from them. Interestingly, since retiring from major league baseball, Wally has consistently been asked to participate in spring training as a special assistant or coach for the Padres. This past year he did so again, but this time things were a little different. Every year, the Padres are required to give all their players and coaches a physical exam, so Wally had been getting a regular annual physical for many years. His doctor was surprised at the radical improvements in Wally’s blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar levels. In fact, his were among the top 5 in the camp. This had never happened to Wally before, but it dawned on him that taking the healthy chocolate product for the previous three months might have had something to do with the robust improvements in his health markers. It had been the only new thing that he had added to his health regimen over the past year. Another change Wally noticed after adding Xoçai products to his diet was a dramatic improvement in his energy levels throughout the day. He also noticed that he didn’t have the aches and pains caused by his years of playing professional sports anymore. One more notable effect that he has discovered is that he doesn’t crave sugary snacks and candy anymore. Anyone who knew Wally growing up knows he had an incredible sweet tooth that he would constantly have to satisfy with all sorts of sugary sweets and empty carbs. The amazing health benefits he experienced have made Wally passionate about healthy chocolate. “This product makes me healthy. It makes you healthy. It gives you the antioxidants that your body needs…. The other realization that I had was that no one is immune to health issues, so it helps everybody.” After personally experiencing the benefits of the healthy chocolate products, he naturally started sharing information about them with other people he knew. Since he found he was doing this anyway, he decided to look into the business end of it. Knowing MXI Corp offered excellent products helped Wally overcome his initial reservations about multi-level marketing, and allowed him to look at their business opportunity more objectively. He no longer takes issue with the MLM business model because he understands more about it now. “I think my first impression [of MLM] was that if you get in early, that you’re going to make a lot of money. If you get in late, you’re gonna make somebody else a lot of money. I understand it differently now. I think it all depends on your passion and your belief in the product, and your willingness to work to share it. If you find it worthwhile, you’re going to make money…. I think it’s a great opportunity.” He eventually came to understand that multi-level marketing companies prefer to compensate hardworking distributors for actively educating customers about their products, instead of rewarding big corporate retailers for passively providing shelf space. Unlike many professional sports figures, Wally is not a paid product endorser. He started out with this company just like any other multi-level marketing distributor. He joined because he loves the products, and enjoys helping others. For Wally, it’s certainly not about the money. In fact, because of his fame, Wally has to be especially careful about what he lends his name to, and what products he endorses. So, he carefully vetted both the product and the company before he considered getting involved with MXI Corp. Needless to say, Wally has found his experience with multi-level marketing to be a very positive and rewarding one. Wally enjoys the freedom that MLM offers, but also enjoys the ‘lack of freedom’. Being involved with the company has given Wally a break from the monotony of his past six years of retirement. And, he’s also happy to have something to talk to people about, and to be able offer something beneficial to help others. "I think, more than anything, it’s fun. I had a great job for 16 years being a professional major league baseball player. That was a fun job. And the fun part about that job was that I was able to share what I was doing with friends and family, and people. I could bring them down to the dugout, and I could take them to the locker room, and after the game I could take them out on the field. And, people would recognize me and say hello. It was a great life. I get that same excitement sharing this chocolate, because it has the same benefit—which is, I’m changing people’s lives for the better. And that’s what’s fun. You know… What’s life about? Life’s about meeting people and changing their lives for the better…. And that’s why I’m excited about this—because it is such fun. I’ve eaten chocolate for 45 years. I’m not trying to tell anyone not to eat chocolate, I’m telling them to eat this instead.” Jared also loves the Xoçai products, and really likes the fact that healthy chocolate sparks people’s curiosity. He also likes the fact that with MXI Corp, distributors get all the benefits of being in a startup company without any of the risk. This is because the Pure Delight Company transferred its resources to form MXI Corp, and developed its new line of healthier chocolate product. So distributors have the security of a financially solid company, combined with a ground floor multi-level marketing opportunity. Now, Jared and Wally travel together sharing the products and opportunity with others around the country. They have even traveled to Japan sharing the product with people in that market. Together, they host chocolate parties, to help people they sponsor get started in the business. Of course, it helps to have a famous baseball player as a featured guest, but the chocolate stands all on its own. Wally finds that most people’s favorite product is their Chocolate Açai Nuggets. Each of these tasty little nuggets offers the same level of nutrition and antioxidant protection you would find in 3 cups of raw spinach. Three of them provide a full day’s supply of antioxidants as recommended by the FDA. However, Wally’s own personal favorite is Xoçai Activ, the liquid chocolate drink. He takes one capful of it daily. Jared and Wally have enjoyed being able to travel, meet people, and share their products with others. They appreciate seeing the beneficial health effects that the products have offered their customers over the last six or seven months, as well as the financial benefits that they have received by becoming involved with the company. “We travel, we share it. We help them understand the business. It’s this cycle that keeps going. And then we get phone calls ‘It’s doing this for my health…’ or ‘My gosh, can you believe I’ve matched my income for the week?’ It’s just a fun thing to see.” Jared and Wally employ a ‘low pressure’ marketing system where they simply host chocolate parties, talk about healthy chocolate, and then if people are interested, they share the business end of it. They eventually plan to start running television and radio ads to promote the product and opportunity too. Even though Jared has reached the rank of double-diamond executive, he still actively talks to people about the products. In Jared’s opinion, just talking to and sharing the products with people is the key to success. When Jared first sponsors someone, the first thing he does is to help them to get their distributor website set up, and show them how to get their business cards. Once they have those taken care of, Jared encourages them to just start giving out samples of products, or hosting chocolate parties. He also recommends they take full advantage of company marketing tools, especially conference calls. Jared doesn’t see any need for distributors to waste time reinventing the wheel, because the company offers great marketing tools, and an easily duplicatable system. The biggest challenge that Jared and Wally find in the business is overcoming the negative image that many people initially have of multi-level marketing. Unfortunately, there have been many cases in the industry where unscrupulous individuals have started MLM companies or pyramid schemes in order to defraud people. There are also under-funded or inexperienced individuals who get involved in starting an MLM company, and don’t have what it takes to make a go of it, so ultimately the distributors suffer. Getting people to understand the difference between a legitimate company like theirs, and fraudulent or undercapitalized organizations is certainly one of the things that any legitimate multi-level marketer must contend with, and get beyond. Jared and Wally feel it is crucial for anyone who is considering getting involved in any MLM company to fully investigate the company, it’s people, and its products before getting involved with them. And, this is what they encourage anyone who has questions or doubts to do. Their advice to anyone getting involved in MLM is to find a product that they are passionate about. Don’t just rely on other people’s stories and testimonials. Take time to try the product, research it, and see if it’s right for you. It has to be something that you want to spend the next five to ten years doing. If you aren’t sincere about your product, people will be able to tell. Also, take advantage of company conference calls—Jared and Wally find them to be particularly effective in conveying not only information, but also the enthusiasm of others to new prospects. Jared feels that if you spend 80% of your working time in multi-level marketing just talking to people, sharing your products, and helping others to do the same, you can’t help but succeed. That’s the easiest way to build your business. Jared says he’ll never go back to traditional business or a regular 9 to 5 job. “I’ll never do that again. There’s just no way. There’s just no freedom. One of the people Jared sponsored was Wally Joyner, the famed major league baseball player. Jared and Wally are both golf-nuts, and have been friends for years. Jared introduced Wally to Xoçai products one day while they were playing golf. Wally had casually asked Jared how his business was doing, and Jared told him that he wasn’t doing his old business anymore, and that he was now selling healthy chocolate. Wally thought it was kind of silly at first. And when Jared told Wally about the company and the business opportunity, he became very skeptical. ‘To be brutally honest with you, I ran the other way’. First of all, he believed that healthy chocolate couldn’t exist, and secondly, Wally didn’t want to have anything to do with multi-level marketing. He’d heard lots of ‘nightmare stories’ about the industry, and believed it was a terrible thing to be involved with. "I told Jared that I wasn’t interested in it because of network marketing. I wished it was something different.”
